Resumo

The early residents of Macau did not mix with the Chinese population. The fusion of Chinese blood among the Macau people during recent past is the result of the Portuguese and euro-asians living with their mutsai. Traditionally, the Chinese women have a very subordinate role in the patriarchal society. The male is still protected, but the woman has begun to acquire academic qualifications and play a more active role in the job market. The two communities, namely the Chinese and the Macaense, are coming closer and the women are becoming increasingly assertive of their rights.

Key-words: Macau, women, Portuguese, Euro-asians, mutsai, rights.
