Abstract: The Iberian Question in Antero de Quental As a result of a national uprise against the French invasions, the political movements of Spain and Portugal were mutually influenced in both the sense of change and reaction. In 1868 that happened with the revolution that brought Isabel II down and would end up leading to the first Spanish Republic, thus surging in this context an outburst of Iberist ideas with several nuances. Antero de Quental would passionately defend the project of Iberian Union in a republican and democratic context, questioning even the principal and sense of nationalities. Later on, he would abandon that Iberist project, which was only retaken sporadically after the British Ultimatum.
