Manipulations in the Abstract Space
ResumoAt the centre of the examinations presented here are the interaction processes takingplace at the interface between theory and form in the design process effectuated bymeans of intermediate media – most of all drawings – in the sphere of geometry. Adecisive role is assigned to abstraction, allowing to locate graphic representations atthe threshold between the projection of a structural model and the notation of animagined model. A graphic study based on the design drawings created by thearchitecture office OMA/Rem Koolhaas are applied here as an example in order todescribe and investigate this interface. In the process the drawings are manipulatedin a hybrid procedure consisting of manoeuvres determined by rules on one hand andfree operations on the other. The examination method thus stands in direct analogyto the hybrid character of the design process itself. Keywords: design, notation, projection, abstraction, Rem Koolhaas, manipulations
