Abstract

This article offers a critical reflection on the role of affirmative communication in the professional practice of social workers with trans and gender-diverse people in healthcare settings. Recognizing communication as an ethical, relational, and foundational competency for quality care, the article analyzes the communicational, institutional, and educational barriers that hinder equitable access to safe and inclusive services. It explores the impact of cisnormativity on healthcare practices, emphasizing the need for intersectional, culturally competent communication skills that respect gender self-determination. The role of social workers in promoting affirming environments and combating exclusion is highlighted, with a call for investment in specialized training and the critical transformation of organizational practices.
