About the Journal

The journal Cadernos de Sociomuseologia is a biannual open-access scientific publication edited by the Department of Museology of Universidade Lusófona (ISSN: 1646-3714).

Founded in 1993, it is currently the oldest continuously published Museology journal in the Portuguese language. Its main objectives are to publish scientific works in the specific field of Sociomuseology, to whose international consolidation the Department of Museology has continuously contributed, supporting education and training in Sociomuseology in general and, in particular, Master's and Doctoral programmes and Postdoctoral research.

The Journal publishes original articles in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish.

It was reorganised in 2013 to follow the guidelines and best practices of international scientific publications and introduced a new numbering system: No. 1-2013, with digital publication.

Since then, the Journal has been accepted into several international indexing networks (SCOPUS; ERIH PLUS; DOAJ; MIAR; Latindex; REDIB…) and assigns Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) registered by DataCite (10.36572). It is distributed through the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) platform.

The Editorial and Peer Review Board is composed of internationally renowned academics in the fields of Museology and Sociomuseology from Brazil, Canada, Spain, France, India, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States.

 

Ethics and Best Practice Framework of Cadernos de Sociomuseologia

Publication Ethics
The journal Cadernos de Sociomuseologia complies with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and follows its Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines. Authors, editors and reviewers are expected to be aware of and comply with best practices in publication ethics. Any publication ethics issues that may arise will be handled in accordance with the COPE flowcharts.

Editorial Policies
The Editor and Editorial Board are responsible for the articles published and must ensure their scientific quality, the transparency of the selection procedures and the management of the publication within a reasonable timeframe. The Editorial Team must safeguard the scientific quality of the Journal, foster scientific debate, remain impartial in the management of articles proposed for publication, guarantee freedom of expression and appoint reviewers for article submissions. The Editorial Team must ensure the dissemination of the submission, writing and selection guidelines adopted by Cadernos de Sociomuseologia.

Article Review:

Articles will be submitted anonymously to reviewers, who must always be specialists in the relevant subject area.
Editors will follow the publication decisions regarding the article as recommended by the reviewers.
Authors have the right to submit complaints to the editors.
Editors are not paid for their editorial work.
Editors and reviewers must maintain confidentiality regarding the procedures under their responsibility, contributing to the protection of authors' personal data.

 

Authorship
Authors are primarily responsible for the content and originality of their work. In the case of collaborative works, the first author must ensure that the other authors have effectively contributed to the work submitted for publication. All authors must take into consideration the comments and corrections suggested by the reviewers.

Plagiarism
Submitted works must be based on original research. Any text or illustration taken from the works of other authors must be properly cited and referenced in the Bibliography in accordance with the citation standards used. This obligation applies regardless of the form adopted, namely: direct copying, altered copying, paraphrasing or translation.

Cadernos de Sociomuseologia takes issues of copyright infringement, plagiarism or other breaches of publication best practices very seriously. Plagiarism, in any form, constitutes unethical conduct and scientific fraud. Submitted articles may be checked using plagiarism-detection software.

If an article is found to have plagiarised another work or included third-party copyrighted material without permission or with insufficient acknowledgement, or if the authorship of the article is disputed, the Journal reserves the right to take action, including, but not limited to: publishing an erratum or corrigendum (correction); withdrawing the article; cancelling its publication; and/or taking appropriate legal action.

Prior Publication
The submission must be original, must not have been previously published and must not be under consideration by other publications. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is not acceptable.

If the article is not published within one year, the author may submit it to other publications, provided that the Editorial Board of Cadernos de Sociomuseologia is informed in advance.

Conflicts of Interest
The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) states in its Guidelines on Good Publication Practice (2003) that: “Conflicts of interest arise when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that are not fully apparent and that may influence their judgements on what is published. They have been described as those which, when revealed later, would make a reasonable reader feel misled or deceived.”

Authors must disclose any conflict of interest before publication of the article. If the research was publicly or privately funded, this must be mentioned in the conflict-of-interest statement.

Reviewers must not consider manuscripts in which they have a conflict of interest with any of the authors, companies or institutions associated with the work.

The Editorial Team safeguards against potential conflicts of interest by submitting articles to external reviewers and following a blind review process. The anonymity of authors and reviewers ensures impartiality and intellectual independence, guaranteeing an unbiased review.

Data Sharing and Reproducibility
Cadernos de Sociomuseologia encourages authors to share the data and other resources supporting the results of their articles by archiving them in an appropriate public repository. Authors may provide a data availability statement, including a link to the repository they used, so that this statement can be published in their article. Shared data must be cited.

Data Protection
The confidentiality of personal information is protected through the commitment of the Editors. The Editors will require authors of empirical research articles to ensure the same procedure and to confirm that research participants have provided written consent to participate in the research. This issue does not arise only when it is understood that empirical research articles, even without the consent of the research participants, do not harm the dignity of the individuals involved.

Complaints and Appeals
Whenever authors or readers consider it appropriate, they have the right to submit complaints and/or allegations of misconduct to the editors. The issue(s) should be sent by email to the editors at cadernos.sociomuseologia@ulusofona.pt, who will review the matter and may consult the Editorial Board and/or external experts before making a decision. Any publication ethics issue that may arise will be handled in accordance with the COPE flowcharts. The editors are committed to responding to all complaints submitted. To appeal a decision made by the Editorial Team, authors must contact the Journal's editors by email within 30 days of receiving the decision.

The Director, Editors and Associate Editors are responsible for the articles published and must ensure their scientific quality and the transparency of the selection procedures. In particular, the Editorial Team must safeguard the scientific quality of the Journal, foster scientific debate, remain impartial in the management of articles proposed for publication, ensure freedom of expression and appoint reviewers for article submissions. The anonymity of authors and reviewers ensures impartiality and intellectual independence.
The Editorial Team must ensure the dissemination of the submission, writing and selection guidelines adopted by Cadernos de Sociomuseologia.

Authors:

Any text or illustration taken from work produced by other authors must be properly cited and referenced in the Bibliography in accordance with the citation standards used. This obligation applies regardless of the form adopted, namely: direct copying, altered copying, paraphrasing or translation.
Plagiarism, in any form, constitutes unethical conduct and scientific fraud.
Whenever a work is found to be wholly or partially plagiarised, its publication must be cancelled and the appropriate procedures initiated.
In the case of collaborative works, the author listed first must ensure that the remaining authors have effectively contributed to the work submitted for publication. Authors must not submit their work simultaneously to several journals.
If the research was funded by public or private resources, the source of funding must be mentioned in the conflict-of-interest statement.
