About the Journal

The International Journal of Games and Social Impact (IJGSI) is an open-access publication for games research and critique on social change, inclusion, education and Human Rights. IJGSI was established in Lusófona University, by the Games and Social Impact Media Research Lab (GLOW) to research, discover, and foster links between games studies in academia and civil society through educational and knowledge exchanges.

This Journal is supported through Hei-Lab (https://doi.org/10.54499/UIDB/05380/2020) and CICANT (https://doi.org/10.54499/UIDB/05260/2020) research units as a strategy to foster multidisciplinary, fundamental, and applied research approaching the intersections between games and human activities. IJGSI is also supported by the FILMEU alliance.

IJGSI is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work’s authorship, with no commercial intent and under the same license.

Aims and Scope

The International Journal of Games and Social Impact (IGJSI) publishes original research in all fields that deal with the intersections between games or other playable media and human activities, with a special focus on their impact on society and all its actors. Therefore, articles that include, not exclusively, the following areas can be considered:

  • The potential social impact(s) of play and games;
  • Games as a tool for social inclusion;
  • Games as tools or strategies to foster change;
  • Game-based learning;
  • Inclusiveness and representation in the games industry;
  • Games motor and cognitive accessibility;
  • Empowerment in and through games;
  • Reflections on inclusion and exclusion in games;
  • Bridging the gap between games industry and academia;
  • Serious applications for commercial games;
  • Novel spaces and contexts for play;
  • Playable Narratives and Immersive Media.

Periodicity

International Journal of Games and Social Impact is a semiannual open-access publication. Whenever the number of articles the journal receives exceeds the size of two issues, a third issue may be published.

Ownership and Management

IJGSI is run by the GLOW Lab (Games and Social Impact Media Research Lab) and subsidized by HEI-Lab (Digital Human-Environment Interaction Lab) and CICANT (Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies), a research unit of Lusófona University, Lisbon, Portugal.

Author Fees

Authors are not requested for submission or processing fees. Under open-access politics, articles are fully available upon publication.

Archiving

All issues of the International Journal Games and Social Impact are available online.

All papers are also deposited in an institutional repository ReCiL.
